{"id":1236,"date":"2020-02-02T08:37:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-02T16:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diyprotection.ca\/bu120226\/?p=1236"},"modified":"2020-09-12T15:24:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T19:24:40","slug":"showcase-diy-protection-in-spt-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diyprotection.ca\/bu120226\/showcase-diy-protection-in-spt-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"Showcase DIY Protection in SP&#038;T Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 19\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>A relatively new wrinkle in the market is the appearance of <a href=\"https:\/\/diyprotection.ca\/bu120226\/\">do-it-your-self security products<\/a>, often sold through big box retailers.<\/p>\n<p>While this trend may have caused some initial consternation among the established alarm industry, or it has just been ignored altogether, some companies, both big and small, have gured out the upside of DIY.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Chaudhary is the CEO of Toronto-based <a href=\"https:\/\/alarmguardsecurity.ca\/\">Alarm Guard Security Services<\/a>, the largest of ADT\u2019s Canadian dealers. (ADT Canada was acquired by Telus last year.)<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhary has been an ADT dealer since 2003 and in 2016 started a sub-dealer program, providing support and services. \u201cWe teach them [dealers] from the get-go and work with them on a daily basis,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The outlook for professional monitoring rms looks good, he says, particularly for forward-look- ing companies who capitalize on opportunities to upsell clients.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of legacy alarm panels still left in the eld and smart dealers will be able \u201cto ll that technology gap&#8230; At the end of the day, it\u2019s a customer market. The custom- er is going to get a lot of bene ts with this new technology,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhary has also established a business which caters purely to the DIY client,<a href=\"https:\/\/diyprotection.ca\/bu120226\/\"> DIYProtection.ca<\/a>. In Chaudhary\u2019s view, the market for this remains an underserved one: retirees, cottagers and people who live in more remote areas. For the latter especially, it can be cost-prohibitive to send out a professional installer, \u201cso it\u2019s a big opportunity for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhary tested out the business model for more than a year before launching the website in 2019. Customers can buy security systems that are pre-packed and pre-programmed. Everything can be shipped in one box and sent via an overnight courier. Once the user sets up the system in their home, they call in to activate it. <a href=\"https:\/\/diyprotection.ca\/bu120226\/plans\/\">Professional monitoring options<\/a> are also avail- able for those who desire a more complete offering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s working very well,\u201d he says of the new business. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing exponential growth, month by month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parks Associates\u2019 Abdelrazik says their research indicates solid growth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/diyprotection.ca\/bu120226\/products\/home-automation\/\">smart home and DIY security<\/a> market, with about 29 per cent of U.S. consumers adopting at least one smart home device. But the DIY model is still a disruptive one, says Abdelrazik, with many dealers wrestling with the question: \u201c\u2018How am I going to sell a DIY system \u2014 something that\u2019s self-installed. And how is that going to compete with what I\u2019m currently offering?\u2019 Deal- ers want to be in the home.
